The Great Northern?s Empire Builder derived its name not from its route nor from mythology, but from the nickname of the railway?s founder, James Jerome Hill. Along with the Great Northern, Hill eventually controlled the Northern Pacific; Spokane, Portland & Seattle; and Burlington railroads, thereby directly challenging E.H. Harriman?s Union Pacific for dominance over the west?s bounty.

The original Pullman green heavyweight Empire Builder commenced service on a 63-hour schedule between Chicago and Tacoma on June 10, 1929. After World War II, the new streamlined Empire Builder began service on February 23, 1947, with a 45-hour service between the Windy City and the Pacific. The streamlined train was ultimately pulled by A-B-A sets of re-geared F3 and F7 freight diesels, which rode on four powered axles. This gave the train a total of twelve traction motors that utilized the available horsepower more efficiently than the E-7s that pulled the initial streamlined train.

The K-LINE version of the Empire Builder features newly upgraded F-7 Diesels featuring loads of separate detail and pulling 21-inch aluminum cars. These cars are ideal to carry on the tradition of Empire Builder elegance and feature unmatched prototypical details including a new two-level sleeping car with two rows of windows. Create a train of any length with a 6-PAC and add-on a 4-PAC, an RPO and an Express Service Car. Also available in 15-inch versions.
