Inaugurated on July 28, 1939, this coach-only, luxury passenger train traveled between New York City and Chicago. The Pacemaker ran on a schedule that was nearly as fast as the more expensive 20th Century Limited. The fast, convenient, overnight route offered passengers an economical and expedient mode of travel. Passengers enjoyed a full service diner and additional amenities that made rail travel a more pleasant experience. An open platform observation lounge car completed this premier passenger train, with the Pacemaker drumhead proudly displayed.
