The year is 1948 and the railroads are in the midst of switching from steam to diesel. Many are ordering engines from the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors and working with the EMD design department to create memorable paint schemes.

Your favorite train company is cataloging many of these engines at the same time they roll out of the paint shops with their dynamic decorating. The Santa Fe War Bonnet paint scheme already exists, but it appears in the toy train catalog with black body instead of the familiar silver. You wonder if Santa Fe has changed their colors, or if the toy train company has just taken creative liberties with the paint. The word prototypical is not even in your vocabulary yet. Regardless of its origin, you want this engine.

When the next catalog comes out, this striking diesel has been replaced with the standard, and by now ubiquitous, silver War Bonnet scheme. The black scheme was never meant to be. Many call it a printer?s error, or an artist?s rendition, however, it was not made.
