C&NW Commuter Cars

Operating in heated competition with the Burlington and Milwaukee Road streamliners, Chicago & North Western launched The 400 in 1939. This streamlined service linked Chicago with Milwaukee, Minneapolis and other Midwestern cities. The bi-level, or gallery cars, were inaugurated on the Flambeau 400 from Chicago to Northern Wisconsin and the Peninsula 400 from Chicago to Upper Michigan in 1955.

The gallery cars were popular in commuter service, where they were referred to as Superbanites. Commuter trains contained a variety bi-level and conventional cars, and we pulled by several different road diesels, including E-8s and F-7s. In 1959 the CN&W modified several F-7s and ordered new gallery cars with a cab on the upper deck for push-pull service. This allowed them to retire conventional cars in favor of the more cost effective gallery cars.
